Of course, every trucker has their favourite make or model. But the big brands are now selling LNG versions, so everyone’s happy.

Of course, at first, like anyone, I had my doubts. It all sounds lovely but show me a gas station that sells the stuff.

So they did. In fact, they showed me loads. Shell’s opening LNG stations locally, on major routes and all across Europe – all the time. Refuelling is a bit different, but it isn’t rocket science. It’s simple, safe and speedy.

The earthing cable that’s stored on the side of the LNG nozzle bay is shown. The truck driver connects the earthing cable to the earthing point on his truck’s tank. A truck symbol appearing on the dispenser’s display is shown along with a green light turning on on the side of the LNG nozzle bay.

Instructions to remove the truck’s tank cap are given. It is explained how to properly clean the LNG receptacle with compressed air before usage.

Step 5
Remove tank cap, clean LNG receptacle
[Video footage]
The truck’s tank cap is removed by the driver. The driver then presses a black button labeled “perslucht – compressed air”. The driver then blows air on the LNG receptacle on his truck.

Instructions are given on how to properly clean and connect the LNG nozzle. It’s explained why any potential water or dirt needs to be removed from the receptacle. It is then explained how to use the red safety button on the receptacle and attach the nozzle to the truck.

Step 6
Clean and connect LNG nozzle
[Video footage]
The driver takes the LNG nozzle out of the LNG nozzle bay and blows air on it using the air gun. After a few seconds the driver stores away the air gun and takes the LNG nozzle towards his truck. The truck driver presses the red safety button on top of the LNG nozzle. He then places the nozzle on the receptacle and pushes the handles on the nozzle towards his truck.

This can cause damage to receptacle or nozzle and may lead to LNG spillage

A warning is given not to use excessive force when attaching the nozzle, as it can damage both the nozzle and receptacle.

Instructions are given to use the truck tank’s pressure gauge to check the tank’s pressure. The information is given that if the pressure is over 10 bar it needs to be reduced.

Check tank pressure

The truck’s tank pressure gauge is shown. The gauge reads 12 bar.

Instructions are given on how to reduce the tank’s pressure to below 10 bar by using the vapour return valve. Instructions are given to keep the LNG nozzle attached to the truck after the vapour return procedure is done.

Vapour return procedure (if necessary)

The truck driver opens the vapour return valve by using a lever above the receptacle on his truck’s tank. The tank pressure gauge drops to below 10 bar, after which the truck driver closes the return valve again using the same lever. After that, the LNG nozzle is shown to be still attached to the receptacle.

The driver walks to the payment terminal and inserts his Shell LNG card. He then enters the required information on the screen of the payment terminal.

It’s explained that the LNG refuelling process can be started by pressing and holding the green button and that refuelling stops when the button is released. It is also explained that it’s normal for ice crystals or vapour to form during refuelling

Press and hold START button

The truck driver presses and holds the green button on the LNG dispenser. A new symbol appears on the dispenser’s display and the numbers on the display start to count up. After that, the LNG nozzle is shown whilst ice forms on it and cold vapour comes off of it.

The truck driver takes the air gun from the side of the LNG nozzle bay and blows air on the LNG nozzle. After that the driver places the nozzle back in the holder on the side of the dispenser.
